"Loved Naples,"
We just returned from a 5 nite stay at the Excelsior in Naples. Naples is much maligned but unfairly so. It is a great city. The people were extrmely nice( even the famous Naples taxidrivers). The food and particularly the pizza eas fabulous. Would recommend Ciro e Mergellina,Ciro a Santa Brigida and Dora as our favorites. This city needs a PR overhaul because it was beautiful, interesting, close to Pompei, Herculaneum Amalfi coast etc. I could have stayed another week. I was with my wife and 3 kids. We never felt unsafe or threatened. Try to get Dolores Caporossa as a guide for anywhere in Naples or surrounding sights. I am so glad we weren't deterred by some of the naysayers on this site.

"Great Stay at Hotel Excelsior in Naples"
We stayed for two nights at the Hotel Excelsior on March 31st and April 1st. The hotel is beautiful and well appointed. We stayed in a suite with an amazing view of the Bay of Naples and Castel dell Ovo. The decor was traditional and comfortable, while still exuding a "luxury collection" atmosphere. (No sign of all the marble a previous reviewer mentioned.) You absolutely can not beat the location on Via Partenope.
I was most impressed by the level of service at the hotel. The concierge and reception staff were friendly and courteous and happily attended to all of our needs. Any questions we had about Naples or logistics (getting to Pompeii and Capri) were met with immediate and helpful answers. (A side note, this contrasted sharply with the less than helpful service we received at the Westin Excelsior in Rome.)
The concierge recommended Ristorante Marino, just a short 2-3 minute walk from the hotel, for a casual dinner. There we ate the best food of our entire 10-day trip. The prices were exceptionally reasonable (4,50-7,00 per course), and despite the fact that the staff barely spoke English, they were enthusiastic and helpful. We ate there two nights in a row because we liked it so much!
Naples is a vibrant, unique city that has much to offer travelers. Prior to the trip, many people wondered why we were even spending time there, but I can honestly say it was a highlight of our trip. There's no place like it! It's also within easy reach of Capri (the marina where the ferries leave is a short walk from the hotel) and Pompeii (trains are a 10-minute cab ride away). I highly recommend Hotel Excelsior and would stay there again without reservation!
