"Satisfied visitor responds to bad reviews"
There are some better hotels, but they are more expensive. Hotel Ideal meets the needs of the lower budget perfectly. It is clean and comfortable with a good breakfast (excellent coffee) and ... what else do you need?
It astonishes me that some reviewers require Neopolitans to speak good English simply because Naples is a tourist destination. Do tourist hotel staff in London or New York speak good Japanese? Not many.
Rest assured, the staff have enough English to get you to your room, so you won't have to sleep in the lobby.
Naples is a real European city with over one million working residents and 2500 years of urban history. It's not Disneyland or Centreparcs, so it should not have to make excuses for the fact that it is very busy and dirty in places. What it does have is more interest per square inch than any other city in Europe.
The city features two entire Roman towns, a volcano, three beautiful islands dripping with historic sights, dozens of medieval churches, several castles (even older than the churches), a handful of monastaries, the most respected archaeological museum in Europe, one of the most enviable sculpture collections in the world, three stunning palaces, botanical gardens, a sinister ossuary, caves and catacombs, hot springs and spas, a romantic promontary dotted with historic luxury villas, the oldest aquarium in Europe ... I'm only about halfway through the list here. It's as far as I've got myself after several visits.
There are so many restaurants, cafes and tavolas that you could eat somewhere different every meal for a year whatever your budget. Tragically though, despite its culinary reputation, there is no Starbucks and only two (completely empty) MacDonalds.
Of course, exploring some of these treasures requires a sense of adventure and a willingness to at least have a go at the language (grunting politely and pointing also works). And of course it can be dangerous around the station, like any city, especially if you want to walk around flashing your Euros and showing off your digital camcorder.
There is nothing else to say. So if you still want to 'give the city a miss' as a previous reviewer recommends, it's your loss. Stick to the traditional tourist trudge and miss out on a gem.

"Good Value, Central Accomodation"
The Hotel Ideal is a basic, clean hotel sprawling across several old buildings on Piazza Garibaldi. The piazza is chaotic and a bit intimidating, but so are large chunks of Naples. Neither the Ideal nor any other of the (often much more expensive) hotels on the square can be blamed for this. The place is clean, the rooms adequate and the bathrooms fine. We had a back room facing into your standard European residential courtyard - very quiet until the working day began around 0630. No A/C but fans supplied. Staff were pleasant and spoke excellent english. Well located on the edge of the old city and on the doorstep of the railway station for connexions to Rome, Palermo, Pompei and Sorrento. Breakfast was your standard budget hotel fare...but was considerably improved by the provision of fresh tea and coffees on request. At 65 euro for a double we booked three nights and stayed four.

"Good value, would stay again"
Hotel Ideal was fine for a cheap, central hotel. I don't agree with the bad reviews, the staff we met spoke excellent English (three receptionists on 24 hour shift, so open all night). It's not the Ritz, but being so cheap and central it was just what I and two friends needed when we stayed in June 2006. The shower was good, beds firm, but not hard. TV in Italian (of course, although MTV type prog was good!) and they were really helpful with information on how to get about, what was where etc. Sound proofing was not good, but then the other guests could have kept the noise down at 3am! And if you don't want a noisy, bustling city then don't go to Naples!!!
